CHINESE GINGER JAR, 1850-1889, HEXAGONAL WITH A JADE GLAZE in Dereham, Norfolk for sale
Probably made in Guangdong province of China called Shekwan or Shiwan between 1850 and 1899. The hexagonal shape has six-panelled sides with chrysanthemum and lotus flowers in relief with carved scrolls on the shoulder, and an unglazed foot rim. The vibrant thick green drip glaze glaze has attractive crazing. A superb example of an early Chinese ginger jar with no damage and in perfect condition. What makes this ginger jar rare compared to others advertised is that it still has its original unopened cork top, and judging by the weight of the jar it still has its contents intact. Dimensions: Height: 9.5 cm. Width at top: 11 cm. Width at base: 8 cm.
